Willoughby City Council has kindly offered the following comments (in blue) relating to garage sales.
(If there is no blue answer on a particular question, then a comment wasn't made.)

  • Are permits required? No permit, but goods sold must be directly related to the occupants and property and not brought in from other sources, othewise other laws come into play.
  • Are there any laws controlling the posting of garage sale signs? Advertising using small signs and notices is OK but these must be removed immediately after the sale is completed.
  • Are there limits to how many garage sales one person can hold per year? No specific limit, but must not be a regular activity.
  • Are there laws about using the footpath in front of the person's house? Sale must be carried out wholly within the property boundaries and not encroach onto Councils verge or roadway nor impede pedestrians or traffic.
  • Other comments offered. As part of the Council's waste collection program, the council supports Second Hand Saturday Events,  1 week prior to General Cleanup collections for each area. This involves a sponsored community garage sale event. See Council website for more details.
  • Is there a page on the web site that covers the laws relating to garage sales?

1) Laws are always subject to change.
2) If there is any doubt, you need to confirm current council laws.
3) provides this information in good faith, but will not be held liable or responsible for any losses or penalties incurred as a result of changes to, or misinterpretation of, current council laws as amended from time to time.
