What exactly is a "Garage Sale"? And how is it different to a carboot sale or a moving sale? They're all the same thing with people selling second hand bits and pieces right?

Well, yes to a point - but not exactly.

Whilst many of these "sale" type events are similiar, there are real differences. Perhaps you've seen signs on the side of the road reading "Moving Sale" or "Estate Sale" and thought - "I guess thats the same as a garage sale, umm is it?" Well is it?

The differences, although somewhat trivial are infact there. To clarify, I thought I would cover the definitions in this article as a way of helping you understand exactly what they mean.

Garage Sale (According to Wikipedia)
Typically the goods in a garage sale are unwanted items from the household with the home owners conducting the sale. The goods are sometimes new, like-new, or just usable, offered for sale because the owner does not want or need the item, to minimize their possessions, or to raise funds. Popular motivations for a garage sale are Spring Cleaning or the owner's move to a new residence, to even getting some well-earned spending money. The seller displays their wares to the passers-by or those responding to signs, flyers, or newspaper ads. Sometimes local television stations will broadcast a sale on the local public channel. The sales venue is typically a garage, driveway, carport, front yard, porch, or occasionally, the interior of a house. Some vendors, known as 'squatters', will set up in a highly trafficked area, and not on their own property.A garage sale, also known as a yard sale, rummage sale, tag sale, attic sale, moving sale, or junk sale, is an informal, irregularly scheduled event for the sale of used goods by private individuals, in which "block sales" are allowed, so that sellers are not required to obtain a business license or collect sales tax.

Moving Sale
A moving sale is basically the same as a garage sale, that is in most respects. However the differences are that the occupants of the residency (typically where the moving sale is being held) are moving house. Pretty obvious right? This means that unlike traditional garage sales, where the occupants may continue to hold garage sales repeatadly at the same address, moving sales generally lead to everything being sold as the occupants are either moving interstate or overseas. It is true most often that items at a moving sale go cheaper, because people simply *have* to sell them as they simply cannot take them with them.

Estate Sale (also according to Wikipedia)
An estate sale is a type of garage sale, yard sale or auction to dispose of the majority of the materials owned by a person who is deceased or will be moving. Estate sales are usually conducted by a professional, for a percentage of the revenues. This is because the scope of the process is usually overwhelming to the survivors, and for the specialist's experience with pricing antique items, his or her following of customers, and the specialist's experience in disposing of unsold goods in an unsentimental manner after the run of the sale. Antique and collectible dealers use estate sales as one of their more important wholesale sources. Estate sales are typically 1 to 3 days long, often with a price reduction toward the end.

Where the survivors of the deceased cannot agree to the disposition of tangible property, a court may order those goods to be sold in an estate sale with the proceeds to be divided between the survivors. Such a sale and division may also be mandated in the will of the deceased.

Carboot Sale (again referenced by Wikipedia)
Car boot sales are a mainly British form of market in which private individuals come together to sell household and garden goods. The term refers to the selling of items from a car's boot (U.K.) (or trunk in the U.S). Although a small proportion of sellers are professional traders selling new goods or seconds, the goods on sale are often used but no longer wanted personal possessions. Car boot sales are a way of focusing a large group of people in one place to recycle still useful but unwanted domestic items that previously would have been thrown away. Car boot sales generally take place within the summer months, however a growing trend of indoor boot sales is now appearing in some parts of the UK. Car boot sales are also very popular in parts of Australia.
